Understanding Anxiety
The 7 Key Types Of Anxiety And The 5 Core Questions You Need To Be Answering
Finding help to overcome anxiety can seem a bit of a "mind" field given the different types of anxiety that there are.
Some of the ways that most therapies go about overcoming anxiety is simply by pigeon holing them so as to prescriptively deal with them by defined type.
But not all anxiety can be so neatly pre-defined. The type of anxiety is important but not the be all and end all of what we should be focusing our attention on.
How we go about getting rid of anxiety should be all about you! How to effectively overcome anxiety attacks will be far better served by focusing more on how you actually do it.
Only You Know Your Anxiety!
People have different interpretations of their experiences no matter what those experiences are. What is exciting and delightful to me will be different to what is exciting and delightful to you.
The same holds true for anxiety! The way anxiety effects you and exactly what triggers anxiety is totally unique to you.
Our society all too often puts far too much attention on the “label”, People are a bit to keen to make a diagnosis or indeed to get diagnosed! And then they actualise and experience the predicted behaviours associated to that label. This applies to both the sufferer and the observer. This approach can badly limit options!
7 High Level Labels!?
There seems to be 7 main high level labels for anxiety, which you can see below. If indeed you will benefit from finding out more you can download my free PDF report detailing what I believe is the big five and my 3 best tools to help to coupe with them?
Though I’m sure you may well already have your own beliefs as to what they are and how they might be effecting you.

Main Definitions (Types) Of Anxiety
SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder).
This is also sometimes classed as a phobic response and can get labelled as a Social Phobia. This anxiety disorder very much effects an individual in social situations and interactions. These can be limited to a very narrow context or be incredibly broad in the worst of cases.
GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder).
This is a far more general and cross contextual anxiety disorder. A person can experience uncontrolled extreme fear, worry and apprehension around specific situations. Any and all activities and events can seem daunting. Anything from health, wealth, career and relationships.
PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).
This anxiety disorder is due to a significant and traumatic emotional or life threatening event. A person will have been exposed to an experience of such intensity that they now have imprinted into their neurology. A heightened state of hyper vigilance exists for them. This is a highly active and easily triggered flight or fight response running for them under the surface all the time.
OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).
The nature and functionality of this disorder is driven more often than not by anxiety. There is a highly inbuilt emotional charge that drives a person to feel the need to repeat and or check an action or behaviour. They will do this multiple times to relieve anxiety and stress that they have neurologically linked to the behaviour.
Separation Anxiety.
This is an excessive and irrational stress and anxiety related to being separated. This is created in an individual when they are faced with having to spend time away from an associated place of safety, security or comfort. Whether that be a person like a mother, or partner or a place like country, town or home. This can also be associated to a group like church, school friends or other important social group.
Performance Anxiety.
This anxiety can take many forms! From stage fright and fear of public speaking. It can be related to sports or academic endeavour. It can also be a perceived expectation and concern about sexual prowess or their abilities have the qualities to be attractive to a prospective mate.
Phobia’s.
This covers all of the traditionally understood and accepted phobias. Things like fear of spiders, cats, heights, open spaces, closed spaces and flying. Though there are an ever growing number of brand new phobia’s. Things like fear of motorways, technology and digital foot print.
