It was over 25 years ago now and driven by that same feeling of desperation. I had to find an answer and quick or face failure and humiliation.

At the time I was working in the printing industry, where I had been trapped since I left school. I was a production manager which I had been doing for at least two thirds of my career.

It was a high stress industry and I was good at what I did. Though I never truly enjoyed it and wouldn’t recommend it, in fact it would be fair to say at times I hated it. The money was good though and I knew nothing else.

I was a big fish in a VERY small pond, full of bluster and bravado about the performance or lack there of, of everyone else, from the sales team, marketing department to upper management.

You know the sort of thing, I always reckoned I could do it far better than them and was usually more than happy to tell them. Though luckily never actually having to back it up and prove it.

Half through frustration, and half through desire for more money. I seized on an unexpected opportunity! I sold myself well and suddenly found myself, promoted to General Manager of an underperforming business unit with a rather disgruntled and demotivated work force!

I realised that I was faced with what felt like a mountain to climb, and for the first time since secondary school I was aware of a most horrible and uncomfortable feeling of fear and self doubt!

I had no idea what to do or how to do it!

I was in the grip of what I now know and often come across with my clients, as “The Imposter Syndrome”. How long could I blag it before I was found out! All of my previous confidence and expertise seemed to disappear overnight and now counted for nothing.

I initially did a lot of hiding. I bought a new suit, a fancy new briefcase and held a lot of meetings, talking up my grand plans for the future all the while gripped by a sense of impending doom.

I realised I had to develop effective strategies and needed to learn some sort of high level people management, sales and influencing skills, and fast!

Back 25 years ago in my General Managers role in the printing industry, I did discover the power of NLP and thank goodness I did, because it really did save me.

Though I have to tell you I did go about it the slow way. I read books, I did audio programs (which were cassettes at the time!!!?) I picked up just enough to make a massive difference in supporting all of my successes in those later stages of what was to become my old career.
